Two key items of content covered in the conference can be downloaded from this website:

  • A performance improvement case study: driving change at The Royal Bournemouth. Examines how Service Line Reporting and a new dashboard-based analysis are being used to support greater engagement with management and clinicians to drive cost and quality improvements.
  • Squaring the circle: resolving the NHS Trust governance challenge. Discusses the challenges of using information more effectively to support better governance by looking at the need for a limited number of high level measures around clinical outcomes, financial and quality/patient satisfaction – our Health, Wealth & Happiness framework.

Partnership with Royal Bournemouth

The Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH) and Trust Analytics Limited have combined their skills and experience in a unique partnership to develop a fully comprehensive service line management system, tailored to the specific needs of a modern NHS organisation.

Trust Analytics Limited is a health analytics specialist, offering a web-based management information service called Acute Trust Analytics to other hospital trusts.

The mission of this joint venture is to:

  • Make financial and management information accessible and easy-to-use for managers and clinicians across trusts
  • Provide NHS boards with an essential tool for effective governance, giving them up-to-date insights into the trust’s activity and finances, and enabling them to make better informed strategic and investment decisions
  • Improve the reliability, timeliness and consistency of financial planning

The service is consistent with Service Line Reporting and Patient Level Costing guidelines as issued by the Department of Health and Monitor, and helps to automate the production of reliable Reference Cost data. It is based on Standard Costing principles to enable managers to quickly identify and drill-down to find the causes of variances from budget or plan.

It is a web-based service with pre-configured functionality, which means it is relatively easy to implement, low cost to run and readily accessible to clinicians and non-financial managers, as well as to the finance function.

Graham Stewart, Head of Management Accounts and Project Lead on Service Line Reporting at RBCH comments: “The Royal Bournemouth welcomes the opportunity to work with a cutting edge information system that will enable the organisation to understand the relationship between income, cost and activity from the service line right down to the patient episode and consultant levels”.

“The unique ability to compare costs and activity relationships with a standard cost approach will enable us to understand at a click of a button where the main differences lie that will need further investigation”.

“This is an exciting development allowing us to make significant informed strategic decisions in the months and years ahead.”
